Why Jacksonville Homeowners Are Getting Hit With Huge Quotes for "Outdated Wiring" — And What's Actually True

If your home was built before 1985, there's a decent chance an electrician has already told you your wiring is dangerous. Maybe they used the words "aluminum wiring" or "knob and tube." Maybe they quoted you $8,000–$20,000 to rewire the house.

Before you hand over that check, here's what's actually true.

Aluminum wiring — the real story:

Aluminum wiring was commonly used in residential construction from roughly 1965–1973. It does carry elevated risk compared to copper — primarily at connection points, not in the wires themselves. But "aluminum wiring" is not an automatic death sentence for your home, and full rewiring is often not the right solution.

The standard remedy recommended by the Consumer Product Safety Commission: have a licensed electrician install CO/ALR-rated outlets and switches at every connection point, and use COPALUM crimps or AlumiConn connectors at all junctions. This costs a fraction of a full rewire and addresses the actual risk.

Full rewiring is warranted when there's active damage, failing insulation, or the home has significant unrelated electrical deficiencies. Not simply because aluminum is present.

Knob and tube wiring:

Found in homes built before the 1940s, knob and tube is genuinely outdated and does have real limitations — it has no ground wire and can't safely support modern electrical loads. However, if it's intact and not buried under insulation (which traps heat), it's not always an emergency.

The risk increases if: insulation has been blown over it, it's been improperly spliced, or it's in a wet area like a bathroom or kitchen.

What to actually do:

  • Get an independent electrical inspection from a licensed Jacksonville electrician — not the one who's quoting the work
  • Ask specifically what they found, where, and what the code-compliant remedy options are
  • Get at least two quotes

JAX Home Network can help you figure out whether a rewiring quote is legitimate or inflated. We work with vetted licensed electricians across NE Florida who will give you a straight answer.
